We appreciate Cumbria is a little out of the way for most people, especially if you're coming from Australia...

So we thought we'd include some tips on how to turn the wedding into a weekend trip (or longer) to make the most of it.

The Lake District

The Lake District is a short ~30-60 minute drive from the wedding, and is one of the most beautiful national parks in the UK. It's incredible for hiking and outdoor pursuits!

Book early as it gets busy in the summer, especially if you're heading to the south Lakes. If you're looking for it to be a bit quieter, stay North!

The Lake District has too many amazing walks and villages to include but some our favourites include:

- Hartsop and Brothers Water

- Kirkstone Pass

- Caldbeck Fells

- Ulswater

- Askham Fell and Arthur's Pike

Scotland

Carlisle is only 15 minutes from Scotland!... and we're pretty bias but it's incredible. We highly recommend paying a visit to our home city of Edinburgh (we can offer a lonngggg list of restaurant reccs if you are Edinburgh-bound), heading up to the Highlands, exploring some lochs or discovering a distillery for a wee dram.

Edinburgh also has a good airport that you can fly out from after the wedding!

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall originally ran all the way from the west coast of Cumbria to the east coast of Northumberland, passing just to the north of Holmegate Farm. Whilst this part of the wall is no longer visible (the Romans got bored towards the end and starting using wood rather than stone), you don't need to travel more than half an hour East of Warwick-on-Eden to find parts of it that are still standing. Housesteads, Birdoswald and Once Brewed (which is also conveniently next to a brewery) are all great spots to combine cracking views with some Roman history.
